I consider myself a lifelong learner, so transitioning from a career in educational publishing to farming didn’t seem that out of the ordinary to me. After I became serious about gardening and farming, I found that I loved sharing my passion for plants and growing food to anyone who had an interest or, frankly, was kind enough to listen.
In 2013 I was growing food for those in need and planting gardens in low income neighborhoods. Then I read the article titled, “A Battle Worth Fighting” by Dulanie Ellis in Organic Gardening magazine. I learned of the need for a million new farmers over the next ten years to replace those that are aging out. And, military veterans could be a solution for the problem. It hit me like a ton of bricks – if this is true, who is going to grow MY food?
I felt an immediate call to action. You see, I am a Vietnam Era US Air Force Veteran – and I love to grow food. I felt a duty to grow farmers as well as food. From this realization was born Growing Healthy People. And I am thrilled to continue on this mission every day.
